Olive oil extraction is the process of extracting the oil present in the olive drupes for food use. The oil is produced in the mesocarp cells, and stored in a particular type of vacuole called a lipovacuole, i.e. every cell contains a tiny olive oil droplet. Olive oil extraction is the process of separating the oil from the other fruit contents (vegetative extract liquid and solid material). It is possible to attain this separation by physical means alone, i.e. oil and water don’t mix, so they are relatively easy to separate. This contrasts with other oils that are extracted with chemical solvents (generally hexane). The first operation when extracting olive oil is washing the olives, to reduce the presence of contaminants, especially soil which can create a particular flavour defect called “soil taste”.

The oil press often used to press soy bean, cottonseed, peanut kernels, sesame, and rape seed is ideal for the small rural oil mill. Sometimes, it may go wrong for various kinds of reasons, such as, produce less or even no oil. At this time, prompt processing must be used to put it right.
1. Less oil produced
①If the pressing bar is tightly assembled or the gap between which is blocked by oil residue and dregs, cleaning must be done timely, or readjust the tightness of the pressing bars. If the oil returns to hopper, material should be stopped to put in, instead add cakes into chamber to drive oil off and continue to work. Or you can discharge the oil from the discharge gate and readjust the components on the chamber, and then turn on the machine to press. ②If the raw material is high in oil, but the cake is too thin to let the oil go through the gap and store in the chamber or hopper. Then operate the machine according to the raw material seeds high in oil. Cakes should be thick; on the other hand it must be thin.
2. Cracked residue appears at the outlet severely
① If the raw material is too dry and residue discharged from the gaps increased, at this time, you need readjust the water content in the raw material.②If the raw material is too wet, the pressure can’t be formed and the oil residue can’t be separated, and if the gap for discharging oil is too wide at this time, the residue will be squeezed out. Then the water content of the oil material and the tightness of the pressing bar should be readjusted.
3. Low oil output
①If the raw material is too wet or too dry, affected with damp and go moldy, the kernels are hollow or the impurities are too much the raw material or the water content in the raw material should be readjusted. ②If the gap for oil discharging is blocked, it must be cleaned and readjust the tightness of the pressing bar according to the oil content. ③If the components had been worn down, they must be replaced by the new ones. ④If the cake is too thin or too thick, the thickness should be readjusted or change the output condition. ⑤ At the beginning of the pressing, if the temperature is too low, it must be elevated.
4. Screw shaft blocked
①If feed too much material at the beginning, you can add the pan-fried oil material seeds to the machine and grinder repeatedly to remove some. ②In the process of the pressing, if the chamber is out of material, it is because feed too much material in the hopper. So the material should be added continuously and well-distributed. And once it blocked, cut the electric power source at once and stop to feed and open the feed plate, and then withdraw the screw shaft, clean the chamber and continue to repress.
Other reasons that affect the productivity
①The cleanliness of the raw material is not clean enough, perhaps sands or impurities enter in to the chamber. ②Screw shaft or the cake outlet is not smooth that it affects feeding and cake outputting. It can be polished with the grinding wheels, or blend some corns with big friction coefficient into the cakes and add right amount water. Then turn on the machine and feed the material gradually to polish the grinding wheel.③If the speed of the screw shaft is too fast or too slow, adjust it until it conform to the rules.④If the screw shaft had been polished, the components should be exchanged.

Generally, rapeseed oil only have 30% of oil extraction rate in vegetable oil processing. If you use the following methods can help you increase 25% oil extraction rate more than before.
Remove the sand by sieve before vegetable oil processing because sand will absorb oil to reduce oil extraction rate of rapeseed.
Well control the fire of cooker. In general, flat bottom cooker is employed to roast rapeseeds and spill all cooked rapeseeds out from cooker at one time. Every time there is 1.5 to 2 kg rapeseeds paste at the bottom of cooker. As a result, when rapeseeds medium cooked, open upside cover, seal downside wind inlet, to control fire of cooker. The detailed way is to built activity tank in the wall of stokehole with an active iron plate embedded. When need big fire, put the iron plate up to seal the stokehole. When need small fire, put the iron plate down to seal the wind inlet.
Change worm shaft of rapeseed oil press. If you use model 95 horizontal oil press, change No.5 worm shaft into old No.6 worm shaft. In this way, the insdie pressure can be increased. The oil extraction section can be pushed 8-10cm after. Only this change can get more 1-2kg oil per 100kg rapeseeds.
Hot material to press becasue oil molecule is most active in high temperature. After cooked, the rapeseeds is just 108 ℃, at this time to press material can extract more oil. As a result, the quantity per batch of cooker had better be controlled in 40-50 kg with no material left to ensure hot mateiral to press.
Limited bran added in rapeseeds can increase oil extraction rate. After adding pressured in press chamber, the flow will be more fast that the oil in rapeseeds have not all extracted when oil cake get out of oil press. So every 100kg rapeseeds can add 5-7kg bran. Good quality rapeseeds add bran more and bad quality rapeseeds add less. The bran should be fresh and no impurities, removing dust by screen. Add bran can make the flow of material slower so extract more oil from rapeseed. After extracted, the oil residue can mix with bran to add into rapeseeds for pressing, which can also increase oil extraction rate.
